Chapter 8
Lobbying that she was the one with the most flexible schedule despite having a newborn, Karen volunteered for the task of trolling the web and making phone calls to find them a larger house.
Around the dinner table, Karen presented her results. “I have three likely candidates. Number one is a four-bedroom, two and half bath near Towson. That makes a good commute for you, Trey, but a rather nasty one for Landon. Number two and three are near Catonsville. One’s a three bedroom, one and half bath with a really reasonable rent while the other’s a five bedroom, 3 bath but it looks…well, not in great condition.”
“Three adults and one full bath are an awkward combination,” said Landon.
“Let’s look at one and three and skip number two. Landon has a point,” said Trey.
“The rent on the big one seems high.”
“Let’s not make any decisions until we see it,” said Landon.

The five bedroom house turned out to be a deal in an odd way. The owner was willing to cut a chunk off the rental price if Trey and Landon agreed to do some repair work.
“We can do the wall paper stripping and repainting in a couple of weekends and the deck rebuild as soon as the weather gets warmer,” suggested Trey as they walked through the house checking it out.
“I’ve never done much home DIY stuff,” said Landon.
“Yeah well, embrace memories of my parents’ house. Every single summer for six years running, my parents tore the shit out of a different room. That place was kind of a dive when they bought it, but by the end of our high school years, it was in pretty good shape.”
“Do they still live there?”
“According to Karen, but since we’re both persona non grata now…I can only assume they live in the same place,” said Trey.
Karen came down from upstairs. “Once Aine gets to the part where she’s crawling, we’d have to get some baby gates to block off the stairs.” She had baby Aine in a sling, the infant secured against Karen’s chest.
“I think this place is a good choice. Do either of you see anything we absolutely cannot deal with?” asked Trey.
Neither Landon nor Karen did.

“That’s everything from your storage unit, right?” asked Trey, carrying the last box from the U-haul into the new house.
“Yeah, I probably kept too many things when I packed. What are we going to do with my bed? Do we really need a guest bed?”
“We’ll stick it in one of the bedrooms unassembled. Aine won’t be a baby forever.” Trey was quietly appalled that almost everything Landon owned fit in a single U-haul. How could Landon think he kept too many things?
“Oh, I didn’t really think of that.” Landon carried a desk lamp.
Trey set the box down on the top of another. He grabbed Landon by a belt loop. “Hey, stop for a minute. Set that down.”
Giving Trey a quizzical look, Landon put the lamp down on the floor.
Trey stepped in front of him and gently pressed him back against the wall.
